Wrath of the Lich King: First Impressions

While some of us (ahem, Matticus) are already level 80, most WoW players are still in the thick of the leveling process.

I thought it might be interesting to share some of my impressions so far with all of you, and of course to invite everyone to add their own thoughts and ideas.

Here’s what’s been going through my mind so far.

1. The art is amazing! Everything feels sharper, more rich, more detailed than previous versions of the game.

2. I love the shadows. The world has a depth that it never did before.

3. I really appreciate quests where I don’t have to kill 6 of this mob and 8 of the other. The more inventive, the better.

4. I still don’t like robot-themed areas. Fizzcrank airstrip gets a big thumbs down.

5. I’m enjoying all of the prehistoric-ish animals and humanoids. It makes me wonder if the designers read Jean Auel’s Clan of the Cave Bear while they were working on the storyline for the Vykrul. If not, it occurs to me that they would probably like it.

6. I really miss flight form.

7. I’m not a fan of land mounts that jiggle too much–they make me dizzy. That means you, Amani War Bear and Black War Elekk. Either I’ve got to take Dramamine or I’m sticking with the Talbuk.

8. I can’t believe I got to ride on a mammoth for a quest. It was a shame that it was even more wiggly than the War Bear! At least I know not to save my money for the Grand Caravan Mammoth now.

9. I can’t believe I have more gold now than when I installed the x-pac.

10. I never thought I would say this, but I love being a laser chicken, if only for a little while. Go Go Hurricane!

  1. I totally agree with # 1&2. The graphics are amazing, especially the fire.

I haven’t done a ton of quests yet, but I’m having fun trying to figure out where the heck everything is.

I prefer Borean Tundra to Howling Fjord, both the look of it and the questing.

I am broke as a joke. With any luck my auctions I posted this morning have sold.

Leveling as resto is great. I have leveling partners and a great, helpful guild so it’s better for me to stay in healy mode.

  2. I love the fact that there’s a much more cohesive storyline than there was in TBC. Some of these ‘events’ in-game are truly amazing.

I’m also really enjoying new instances where we really don’t know what we’re encountering until we actually get in there. Makes it very adventurous.

It’s nice being greeted everywhere as ‘hero’, and hearing things like ‘I’ve heard great things about you.’ Much nicer than being called a scrub and having quest-givers say things like ‘you’ll have to do’.

  3. The music, particularly in Borean Tundra and Dragonblight, is great. I got the CE and as usual I kind of ignored the soundtrack CD. After a day in Borean Tundra I was digging out the CD and putting it in my car.

  4. Great post Syd,
I love the cinematics after completing all the quests for VE in Dragonblight and seeing the Undercity for the quests thereafter.
The new content for the instances is fun, but they seem very easy thus far. I assume Naxx 10man isn’t this easy.
The Halo type riding quests are great, I wish they were dailies.

  5. The quests. There’s so many new inventive quests to change things around. Maybe it’s just cuz it’s new, but it feels like there’s less of the go here, kill x number of y mob.

  7. I am so totally confused over the gear now being dropped. Do healing priest go with intellect-spirit or spirit-intellect. AND whats happening to our mana regen. Please help with some guide lines on the new gear being dropped, it looks good, BUT mana is going down the tubes. And I don’t know what to do.

    Thanks
    Red
