Goodbye Old World

It’s time you evolved. It’s going to cause a bit of pain from the slight scarring, but it will be for the better. One of my fondest memories of going through the old world is the constant world PvP action between Southshore and Tarren Mill. It finally appears that battle has been decided. The Horde have emerged victorious. Of course, not to be out done, Alliance forces pressed into southern Barrens and laid siege to Camp Taurajo. Blackrock Mountain will soon erupt with a flurry of activity from both sides. I remember on one of the previous servers, there was a guild called the <Blackrock Mountain Police>. As you can guess, all they did was clear out the place of any Horde players.

I ran Zul’Gurub one last time and I got shut out. Raptor gave me nothing and I couldn’t take down the Tiger boss.

Memories

  • I remember waiting what felt like five years for that stupid Defias Messenger.
  • I remember AFK running looking for Mankirk’s wife during my (brief) time as a Horde player.
  • I remember that insane run from Auberdine all the way down to Ashenvale and then on to the Zoram Strand for Blackfathom Deeps.
  • I remember how desolate Desloace truly was.
  • I remember all those chicken robot escort quests found in Feralas, Tanaris and the Hinterlands.
  • I remember grinding off buzzards, scorpions and basilisks out in Blasted Lands during that dreaded lower 50s bracket.
  • I remember a zone called Alterac Mountains.
  • I remember doing that Legend of Stalvan quest and wondering who the heck was this guy and would he one day end up being a raid boss (nope).
  • I remember doing the long Onyxia attunement quest chain (Respect to the Horde players who did theirs).
  • Yeah, it won’t be the same.

What’s the one favourite memory you have of the old world?

Another podcast appearance by me. This time, it wasn’t Matt the blogger or Matt the healer. It was produced from the standpoint of Matt the GM. I spoke about how Conquest came to fruition, some of the tough decisions that had to be made and the rewards of being a GM. I also offered a bit of advice to players who do not feel content in their guilds and believe they can do a better job by striking out on their own. This is a good a time as any.

And finally, you get the full story of how Matt’s raiding iron man streak got ruined by his Wii (actually, I probably lost the Iron Man streak a long time ago).

Just a heads up that the content on the podcast is considered NSFW (some explicit language).

Can’t wait for it? Here’s a brief teaser.

Full episode will be released tomorrow evening (November 23).

New class combinations?

Anyone plan on rolling any new alts? I think I’ll probably set up a Night Elf Mage. And I know some of you are curious, but this priest will remain a dwarf not a gnome.

  1. The repeat runs on foot/hoof (no mounts) from Raven Hill Cementary to Duskwood.

Paying Patches back once I was 70.

For now I’m thinking a drunken dwarf shaman will do. Heirlooms and dual tankards are ready. Seems all to fitting.

  2. Oh man, oh man, I HATE that stupid Defias Messenger.

One of my fondest memories was my friend ran me through SM: Cathedral about a thousand times so I could level to 40 for my first ground mount (TBC era). And I can’t ever forget the 4 days it took for my husband and I do complete the Night Elf starting area quests. That was when I first started playing and I couldn’t figure out how to actually move my character. 🙂

I’m excited for the Shattering, but it’s pretty bittersweet. I’ve been playing since January 2007 (two weeks before TBC came out) and it’ll be weird to login this evening and see so many changes. This game is constantly evolving and I get the need for change. But that realization doesn’t make it any less sad. <:*)

  3. I remember:

-Being killed several times over by the trolls in Coldridge Valley, Dun Morogh. This was back when the trolls in the caves were hostile and I was still getting used to the concept of WASD.

-Tearing around Stranglethorn Vale in my newly acquired ghost wolf form. I was so excited to actually move even the slightest bit faster than walking. I’d find bumps and hills that I could bound off to catch a few seconds of air.

-Traveling the world leveling my fishing skill. While I did this at 70, it still took a very long time since I had to go to the zone appropriate for my fishing skill.

Today, when I get home from work, Gnoheals will wake up in Gnomeregan, irradiated and tired, but ready to jump into training. I might also make a dwarf shaman, just for the fun of it. I cleared two spots in my character list just so I could do this.

  4. For me, it has to be the Paladin mount quest chain. I did this at level 60, and it was long, expensive and involved. I loved it.

I will also never forget the death run you make as a lowbie from Menethil to IronForge.

  5. I remember how BIG the world used to feel! On my very first day playing WoW, accidentally wandering off the path in Elwynn Forest and feeling completely lost. I kind of miss that sense of awe and wonder.

I remember running to Scarlet Monastery (as Alliance), or any of the other instances for that matter. I know it was maybe a bother in hindsight, but it all felt so epic, like you were ACTUALLY traversing that distance and fighting real dangerous enemies.

    Ahhh the nostalgia *sighs*

  6. There are so many good memories for me in this game but the hunter epic quest at 60 is my all time favorite.
I still have my bow, polearm, and quiver sitting in the bank.

  7. Duskwood. It was terrifying, and wonderful at the same time. Running away from Mor’Ladim and the three grave robbers. Finishing the Mor’Ladim quest.

Elite ogres in the ruins of Alterac.

    Stromgarde Keep.

Arriving at Light’s Hope Chapel for the first time on my Paladin, and feeling like I absolutely belonged there.

Having Gryan Stoutmantle shout my name from Sentinel Hill and feeling, for the first time in the game, like an actual hero.

Well, a few more than one, but it’s hard to boil it down, isn’t it?

  8. Oh snap, you know what guys? I forgot to add acquiring Benediction to that list. Took me over 10 tries (I can’t remember the exact number now). Such a huge wave of relief when I finally scored it.

  9. I’ll miss… a lot of things, overall. But what I’ll miss the most, it’s how fresh everything was back then. How everything was new and special. I’ll miss Dire Maul’s launch… and how you could feel the entire server’s excitation, greater than it was for any other content patch I’ve seen since then.

  10. Without a doubt, the Dreadsteed quest. You had to get tons of gold, quest items, and then? You had to find 4 other people to go to Dire Maul for no other reason than to help you. As a warlock it was a matter of pride to have the Dreadsteed instead of the regular mount. It took me over 6 months to accomplish this epic quest chain.

    • The dreedstead questline back then for me too. Oh the pride when I finally had it (level 62).

Actually, all the class special quests. That could come back

  11. Oh, memories… Scarlet Monastery for my first ‘real’ instance with my friends, and then the BRD/UBRS/LBRS set… I’m gonna miss it, really…

Why is it so dusty in here all of a sudden?

  12. I’d have to say trying to plan a run on a level ten alt from ironforge to stormwind before I knew a train existed. I actually ended up deleting that character because I got lost and couldn’t find my way back (to this day I have no idea where i was, I think somewhere in searing gorgeor badlands)

So long, old world. You will be missed
