31 Day Challenge: The Elevator Pitch

On Saturday, I made a quick note that I would be participating in this year’s 31 days to building a better blog.

Earlier readers will remember the previous tagline I use was Knowledge through Logic and Reason. That wasn’t the best of taglines to use on a healing related blog.

Anna suggested World of Matticus – Where Leadership and Healing Collide (without the train wreck). I know if I the blog had a business card of some sort it would read something like: "Problems with healing? Guild issues got you down? Matt can help!”

For most WoW bloggers, I suspect their elevator pitch would be something related to their character (The adventures of ____ or the musings of a <race> <class>). I have yet to think of the perfect pitch. This blog isn’t just mine anymore. It’s Wyns, Syds, Lodurs and everyone that’s ever contributed via comments or guest posts or emails.

When people discover that I’m a blogger, they always ask “Oh, what do you write about?”. I admit that it’s a bit frustrating to come up with an answer. I usually have different ones on standby depending on the what I know about the person. If they’re my age, they’ve heard of World of Warcraft. If they’re of a different generation or not as fluent with video games, I’ll tell them I write about gaming strategy and advice.

So here’s the short form of what I would use across the network.

World of Matticus: Improving Today’s Healers and Tomorrow’s Leaders
PlusHeal: The Universal Healing Community for all Specs and Skills
No Stock UI: A Different Playing Experience

The elevator pitch is a great way for you to really buckle down and figure out who you are and what you want to do.

Apping for Guilds

This works the same way. When you’re applying for a guild and you’re speaking to an officer or a GM, most of them get a good handle on the type of player they’re dealing with in a few minutes. So you should take the time to develop a small pitch for yourself if you’re in between guilds.

Example – I’m a progression raiding oriented Discipline Priest

I’m about to head out and do some progression oriented studying and then some more volleyball!

For the bloggers out there, what would your tagline be and what is your blog about?

  1. I’m also doing the 31 day challenge, since there are many things about Too Many Annas that have changed over the last year, some organic and some due to changes in the community.

Anyway – I’ve got a new tagline as well, as part of my elevator pitch:

Too Many Annas – Because Raiding and Roleplay are not Mutually Exclusive

As well as a shiny new updated About page and a more cohesive idea of how to explain what it is that I write about over there. Highly recommend the 31 day project to any bloggers, even if you choose to just read along and ponder rather than being active!

  2. I’m doing the 31DBBB as well. I ran this by a few people and they think it pretty much describes my blog 🙂

“My blog is about me! Hopefully, this is a frequently delightful, refreshing, look at life and the people in it as viewed by a gamer girl, a writer, and a role player. ‘Hey does anyone know if she pronounces that Zan-Knee or Zany?’”

I wanted the one below, it’s what Felicia Day called me… woot! I was told that was just an opinion, though 🙂 *grins*

  3. I think my Blog title and tagline sum it up.

    Armaggedon’s coming
It’s the end of the world as you know it – brought to you by a Gnome Mage with big balls of fire & his Tree Hugging Mate

  4. For World of Warcraft Wanderings:

Old tagline – Azeroth, Outland, Northrend and New Jersey – or – yes, I am a real life female

Revamped tagline – A “real life” female’s (mis)adventures in the World of Warcraft and the World of New Jersey.

I like it because it gets rid of the confusing ” … or … ” and Northrend’s part of Azeroth anyway.

My personal blog’s much harder because it’s basically a diary spanning the last 6 years of my life. I have to mull that over a bit more.

  5. I’m not sure I wish to change my blog tag line because mine has remained what it’s always been about. It can be turned a little more maybe, but for the most part I like it the way it is.

I haven’t strayed much from what it’s about in tagline. It remain my life and time as a dedicated player of my class and spec and my perspective from my edge of the world in wow. I can’t say I’m planning on changing my perspective after almost 3 years as my blog tagline pretty much define the player I am and the view that I take.

  6. My blog may have only been around for about a week, but the tagline is evolving quickly as each post makes its way onto the screen.

Firstly, it is the ramblings of a casual priest (should be pretty clear from the title)

Then it also became an outlet for the general Wow rantings of Salome.

And it is also about to become the terrified thought-processes of a new guild leader, as somewhat unexpectedly the blog has led to me being told that I could not moan about there being no casual raid guilds willing to accept people with no Naxx experience unless I was willing to lead one myself. So check it out soon for the progress of my experimental experienceless guild.

  8. When I first started, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to write about. Consequently, I never came up with a tag line. In recent days I’ve found my focus and, when I read your post, realized I should put some thought into a tagline. I chose, Reflections on Raiding, Role Play and Real Life. My blog feels a little more “complete” now. Thanks for the inspiration, Matticus!
