Trial by fire in pugs is great, if you don't mind copping abuse for your healing, which is likely to be sub-par at first. I'd suggest staying with a group (at least mostly) made of friends for a while. It's bad enough putting up with the abuse for failing to heal stupid, let alone adding in genuine-bad-healer abuse too.

Once you know you can heal with a competent group, then pugs are a great teacher.

I just came back from a leave of absence due to a deployment overseas and thought I could jump right back into healing. Thankfully, I've been healing long enough that I was able to make up for a few mistakes made early on. The thing I've noticed after leaving the game for a while and not healing is the speed of the game. You really don't get a feel for how quickly healers need to react until you're already into it. Once you get the speed down for each encounter again, the rest of the pieces seem to fall into place a lot easier.

Startng with heroics is great advise. I'd like to add a twist. Don't go with guildies but rather pug as much as possible. However frustrating it can be it will help you more healing "bad" players. Or go with a tank with 20k health and no def cap and work on your pre-casting :) Also doing BGs and working on survivabillity while pumping out those green numbers is good exercise.

When re-learning how to heal on my shaman alt, I started just running normal 5-man dungeons and then worked my way to heroics once I got used to how my spells worked & got good enough gear for it.
