Thanks for this! Great post. Your style pretty much sounds like the type that would be very easy to follow.

... I am totally not coherent today, but ANYWAY. When I'm forced to lead anything, I'm pretty uh... punchy. There's no other way to describe "@#$% or get off the pot, guys - fine, we're running the daily, we don't have all night, get to the damn stone."

Why yes I have to heavily censor myself in my groups why do you ask.

My preferred way to lead raids is really different, I think. In fact I boggle the minds of those that have never run with me before. Like assigning healers (when it's a true pug) I ask them WHAT THEY ARE GOOD AT. Yes I know a healer will do what they're told but I want to know what those healers think they're best at. I want to work with them, not just give orders. It really can cause some confusion in real pugs, but other than the almost fear of communicating, I love to use it. The reactions can be fun. Maybe it's my preference to every once in awhile put together a whole bunch of people that have never worked together before. But watching how they react to questions about what they do best (tanks where are you pulling the boss?) It can be a bit more relaxed for the dps since... all they do is dps, but in massive pulls like Faction Champs or some of the trash in Ulduar, or Sarth +drakes it can be interesting.

And I'm not sure where this falls in your list. Because of course I get their feedback and then give assignments as necessary.

@paolo I agree that how a leader handles stress is what truly shows if they are cut out for it or not. What I've written about here is just the broad set of typical leadership personalities as well as the general characteristics of them, and an explanation of the style I employ.

Defining what it is to be a leader, as well as what it is to be a good leader is the topic for another post.

Very interesting list! In my experience, true leadership is shown (or not!) in how the leader responds to the unexpected challenges, the hard decisions. Leading a guild through content they already know is not much of a challenge, nor does it reveal the amount of authority a leader is willing to shoulder. The styles of leadership you discussed are really fascinating, and all very useful to have in your bag of tricks -- up to the point that a situation arises that is beyond what's already been mapped out. Then there's only two options: defer (i.e., avoid) responsibility, or be the one who decides, who's willing to suffer the consequences of making a big mistake. It takes a lot of guts and a lot of integrity to do that, but that's what true leadership is all about.

Nicely done. I agree that a good majority of guilds, especially those who are easygoing and laid-back about progression tend to fall into the laissez-faire category, since it tends to cause the least drama, at least in the short term.

Speaking of which, Lodur, you should pester matt about squeezing your profile into the bottom of the page rather than having people click through to the 'about' page :)
