80 Holy priest here.

The most valuable trait that i compare myself to with other healers is mana conservation. It worries me that even with my conservative style of healing (heal predictable damage and don't heal if not needed) I usually run out of mana before my superior priest. Both of Us are Holy, but she dishes out both more healing done and overhealing done on the charts, and still seems to conserve mana better than me. Our gear sets are nearly identical, and our specs are the same as well. I always try to rationalize that Because she has more overhealing she is casting unnecessarily, and because of my always bottom overhealing, that the heals i do cast are well timed and well spent.

I usually try to worm my way out of tank healing because i dislike the responsibility. The tank dies everyone knows who to look at, granted I usually do pretty well.

Maybe it's just that her play style is diffrent, that she can heal more for the same, if not less mana than i do. I'm actually a very Renew heavy priest, my renew generally is at par with my CoH total healing. It's just so unerving, because I'm usually the top of the charts when i pug, but I'm NEVER above her.

I realize that I'm doing my job, but the chart just mocks me, and makes me feel less significant, the chart is an evil, evil thing. There HAS to be a better way, the charts simply cause too much stress among healers.

(I think my "Take action only when needed" playing style is sprouted from my deep attachment to the discipline spec, but it's simply not as powerful)

Good article. I think for raid healing it has to do with assignments and rotations and so forth, not just meter chasing. That gets people killed, quick. My druid is naxx25 geared and often would be eclipsed by other healers (when i do PUGs or something, i no longer raid); my response is so what. It's not like healing more would get the boss down faster. Now if your assignments are dying that's one thing. But yeah it is surprising how hard it is to analyze healing.

Great post. My healers tend to dwell on the meters too much -- without even thinking about class/spec, they usually say "this pally (or disc priest) sucks, lets bring in so and so", and so and so is another holy priest.

I play moonkin full-time, but I went resto the other day for one of my raids since I was short. My holy priest, more than doubled my healing, but the group I was assigned to heal didn't die, and I had the tanks HoTed up the entire time. Some people just weigh the meters too heavily, I honestly only use them to see if someone is absurdly low or obvious dc'ed (or not healing who they should be healing).

I have been a Holy Paladin since I first rolled, 3 years now. Raided MC and BWL in the old days, then TBC and now Wrath.

I think in all that time I have never once looked at healing meters. Unlike dps I just don't care and tbh I can't imagine why any healer would.

Our job is to keep the raid alive - if they live we did a good job, if they didn;t well it might or might not be us. Selfishly (as a MT healer) provided he/she stays alive I did my job. Often my healing is low, but then its often the MT thats highest geared and often takes lower damage than the rest of the raid.

As for sniping, if someone in the raid is very low on health and I pop them a heal to keep them alive I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks. A dead raider is zero dps raider.

nice post :0
As a new raiding holy priest i looked close at recount and WoL to see if i was on par with the other 2 healers. My first question was if i could compare our stats, but your article explained that :) Not really for compare reasons, but helpful to analyze my own performance. In my very first ever naxx raid i was on top of the list so i was excited and proud haha i found the pally slacking...cos i outhealed him more than 2 times. Now i know better :P he was a tank healer and i was raid healing and he debuffed more. Now i know how to interpret those meters with more understanding , so thanks!
btw as a dps i know what my dps is in naxx (2K), but how about hps ?
